Originally, this article was meant to outline steps I’d gathered from various sources over the years about achieving work-life balance. However, after writing it and reflecting on my own life, I realized that I hadn’t achieved any kind of balance. There always seemed to be an imbalance, and I often felt guilty about it. That’s when I stumbled upon an article in Forbes by author Michael McColgan, which questions the feasibility of achieving the perfect work-life balance, especially for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and freelancers.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand, and it’s more of a lifestyle than just a set of steps and strategies:
Harmony Over Balance
Is the ideal work-life balance just a dream? The concept of harmony makes it much more achievable. Life is not static, and it requires us to adapt to its ever-changing demands. There will be times when work or important projects require extra effort and focus, while at other times, you’ll need to dedicate yourself to family, relaxation, and your physical and mental well-being.
For instance, there may be times when you need to put in extra effort to complete a crucial project or meet an urgent work deadline. However, after that, you might decide to take a break and enjoy quality time with your family or friends. This harmony allows you to fully and joyfully embrace every aspect of your life without guilt.
When you apply the concept of life harmony, you accept the reality that you can’t equally attend to every aspect of your life at all times. Instead, you set your priorities and direct your efforts based on what’s needed in the present moment. When you’re flexible and adaptive, you can achieve balance that aligns with your unique circumstances.
Are You Living Right or Well?
It’s not about “doing the right thing.” It’s about living life “well.” That’s the critical question: Are you living a good life? This simple question encompasses all aspects of your life, from your financial well-being to your physical health, and even your personal relationships.
If you’re not living a good life, meaning you’re not taking care of your well-being, making healthy decisions, or working in a field you love, then striving for work-life balance won’t bring much benefit.
You’ll live a life filled with negativity and stress.
When you begin to view work as a means to improve the life you dream of and desire, your perspective becomes more realistic and harmonious. We all aspire to live well, and this enhances our overall happiness and success.
Identifying True Priorities
Setting priorities may be the key to managing your time better. It’s crucial to think about what’s most important in your life and focus on those aspects. For example, if you feel that spending time with your family is the most vital aspect for you, allocate specific time for that and commit to it without hesitation. When you identify your true priorities, you can channel your energy and time into what contributes to your personal happiness and well-being.
In conclusion, remember the science lesson from elementary school about adaptation and our ability to positively and constructively deal with changes and challenges? Adaptation and flexibility are all you need for a healthy, harmonious life in all its aspects. Achieving the perfect work-life balance may be elusive, but striving for a life of harmony and well-being is well within reach.
